Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo were chosen to play Glinda and Elphaba, respectively, in November 2021. Director Jon M.
Chu provided additional information about the project in April 2022, revealing that it would now be released in two parts.
Chu clarified that the creative team chose to divide the adaptation into two films in order to offer themselves “a bigger canvas”
and avoid eliminating too many musical numbers and significant characters. He continued, “With more space, we can tell the story of Wicked the way it was meant to be told.”

Yeoh announced her Wicked role in May 2023 at a Fukuoka, Japan, film festival. She stated, “

Variety reports that Ethan Slater, who starred in SpongeBob SquarePants: The Musical, plays Boq in the film, while Marisa Bode plays Nessarose,
Bowen Yang plays Fanny, Bronwyn James plays Shenshen, Keala Settle plays Miss Caudle, Aaron Teoh plays Averick, and Collin Michael Carmichael plays Professor Natick.
It was revealed in April 2024 that Peter Dinklage would portray Dr. Dillamond, a goat who teaches history at Shiz University.
Who is helming the Wicked motion picture?
Tony Award winner Stephen Daldry was set to direct, however in October 2020, he formally left the project.
Later, in February 2021, Jon M. Chu, the visionary behind the Broadway production of In the Heights and the Crazy Rich Asians film adaptations, was chosen to helm the picture.
A few cast members from the Broadway original musical will also make a comeback in the movie.
The screenplay is being adapted by Stephen Schwartz and Winnie Holzman, who penned the Broadway production’s music and lyrics. Marc Platt will serve as producer once again.
What changes might we expect between the Wicked musical and movie?
Erivo disclosed on the 2022 SAG Awards red carpet that the Wicked movie will change slightly from the original.
She told Entertainment Tonight, “I think it’s going to be different than anything you’ve ever seen before.”
“I believe the magic of it will be enjoyable for us. We’ll attempt to add our own unique perspective to what we already know and tell you the tale of two sisters.”
Will the Wicked movie have new music?
Prior to this, Schwartz revealed that there will be new music in the film.
In 2016, he stated, “I can tell you that at least as of now there will probably be four new songs in the movie,” according to Playbill.
In addition, he mentioned that three of the songs were left out of the Broadway version and that the other two were newly composed.
On his online fan email The Schwartz Scene, Schwartz gave fans a preview of his latest demo recording sessions for the film, featuring music director Stephen Orr, in July 2022.
In an interview with ET, Erivo disclosed that she and Grande would start prepping for the movie in July 2022. When Grande debuted her blonde hair for the role in October 2022,
she hinted that filming would soon start. Chu declared in December 2022 that production had started.
There were rumors that work had stopped during the July SAG strike since the Buckinghamshire village that Universal had converted into a set was virtually deserted. Later
Chu announced on her Instagram Story that the SAG strike had forced the suspension of production, adding that there were “only a few days” remaining to finish filming.

Chu posted two photographs from the upcoming two-part film adaption, depicting Grande and Erivo playing Glinda and Elphaba, respectively.

A teaser clip for the 2024 Super Bowl was unveiled, offering fans their first glimpse of Oz and a glimpse of Glinda and Elphaba in action.
The whole Wicked trailer, which offers a fantastic glimpse at the magnificent sets, eye-catching costumes, and memorable performances, was published in May 2024.
Watchers not only get to hear Erivo sing “Defying Gravity,” but they also get to hear Grande perform “Popular.”
What day does the Wicked movie come out?
There will be two parts to the film: the first will be released in 2024, and the second will follow the following year.
The film was originally slated to be released on December 22, 2021, however owing to COVID-19-related production difficulties, the date was pushed back.
Chu hinted that the Wicked movies would be released “over consecutive Christmas holidays beginning in December 2024” in a statement from April 2022.
