Growing up in San Diego, Koman had a keen interest in humor from an early age.
UCSD’s library held a collection of vintage vinyl comedy records, which he listened to a lot; he also got an after-school job at the Comedy Store club in La Jolla, which was one of his early outlets for this interest.

Koman worked with colleagues Late Night writers Brian Stack and Andrew Weinberg from 2001 to 2008, contributing to the creation of recurrent characters and skits including
“The Interrupter” and “Hannigan the Traveling Salesman”. In addition, he created the idea for Aaron Sorkin’s Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip, which was dubbed “Studio 6A” (a reference to Conan’s television studio at 30 Rockefeller Plaza).
This was the idea for the popular phrase “Walker, Texas Ranger lever”. Thus, mocked. The show itself was a made-up adaptation of Saturday Night Live, a frequently sarcastic program.
After learning about O’Brien’s ardent fan following in Finland, the program taped a special episode, and Coman and Weinberg,
along with head writer Mike Sweeney, joined the presenter and assisted with preparation.
In between gigs on Late Night, Koman made sporadic appearances in on-air sketches.
In one comedy, he portrayed the show’s accountant who put out an absurd solution to the gay marriage controversy that garnered national attention in 2004.
In a different comedy, Koman phoned in sick to work on May 16, 2007, and O’Brien confronted him at home.
After being coerced into the studio for the live recording, Coman was publicly humiliated (despite appearing to have participated voluntarily).
The piece reignited the romance between Koman and Ellie Kemper, his future wife, who worked as a regular cast member in the show’s sketches and as an intern for the writers’ team.
